Inland Kayak Courses

The following courses are being run this year by the Outdoor Education Service

If you wish to attend any of the courses, please download an information request form, (Click Here), complete it and send it to the Centre running the course.

All our paddling courses are staffed by fully qualified professional coaches and will be delivered in locations relevant to the course concerned. All specialist equipment and clothing such as waterproofs, wetsuits, buoyancy aids, boats etc is provided by the Centre, however if you have your own equipment, you are always welcome to bring it with you.

The cost of all our courses includes full board and lodging, all instruction, transport whilst at the Centre and the loan of all equipment. For those staying residentially, all bed linen is provided, but please bring your own towels.

 


Introduction to Inland Kayaking

 This weekend is a great opportunity to learn the fundamentals of kayaking. During the course we will focus on developing good boat handling skills and safety awareness. We will be paddling on sheltered water. An ideal course for newcomers of all ages

Introduction to White Water Kayaking

This weekend will be an ideal opportunity for those who have done a little paddling before to venture onto moving water. The course is most likely to take place on the Rivers Esk and Ure, giving a grade 2 paddling experience. For further information, please contact East Barnby Centre

BCU 2* Inland Kayak Training & Assessment

This course is and ideal opportunity to develop your paddling skills further with the opportunity to obtain a BCU 2* certificate. During the course we will focus on developing good boat handling skills and safety awareness, as well as achieving the skills required for the 2*. We will be paddling on sheltered water.

Improvers White Water Kayak

This course is aimed at confident paddlers who wish to extend their white water skills. Over the course of the weekend we will develop white water boat handling skills both solo and tandem. The paddling will take place on Yorkshire Rivers and will involve two days of intensive coaching involving personal skills, river running and safety skills.

The ability to have a lot of fun and laugh is essential!

This course starts at 9.00am on Saturday.

For those staying residentially accommodation is available on Friday night from 7.00pm if needed. The first meal at the Centre will then be 8.30am on Saturday.

White Water Inland Kayak in the Lake District

BCU 3* Inland Kayak Training & Assessment

This is a practical course which builds on your previous experience and introduces many new skills. A combination of new boat handling skills and knowledge prepares you for improved kayaking. An ideal progression towards more skilful paddling.

Pre Course Experience

You should be able to paddle comfortably on flat water

A 2* certificate is desirable but not essential

BCU 4* Inland Kayak Training & Assessment

This is a practical course witch will hone your kayaking skills and test your abilities at 4* level. It is desirable to have completed your 3 Star Kayak award before attending. However, if you do not have this Certificate, candidates with suitable experience can be assessed at 4 Star level and elements of the 1-3 Star syllabuses will be covered during the weekend

BCU 5* Canoe Training OR Assessment

BCU Level 1 Inland Kayak Coach Training & Assessment

This one day course is aimed at those who wish to introduce others to kayaking and canoeing at a “taster” level only, using small, sheltered, simple water sites. Training and assessment can be completed in one day provided the paddler is competent at 2* level and has met the pre-requisits detailed below.

Pre Course Experience

Being at least 18 years old, you will hold a 2 Star Inland Kayak Test Certificate and Canoe Safety Test Certificate. In addition you must hold a current first aid certificate, (minimum of 4 hours training), and be at least a basic member of the BCU.

BCU Level 2 Inland Kayak Coach Training

This course is intended for those introducing beginners to simple inland or sheltered coastal waters. It is the first step on the Coaching progression and we will put you through an intensive weekend of training and preparation. It is an essential stepping stone for Coaches in outdoor centres, schools and clubs. You will receive excellent training from professional Coaches in relevant locations

Pre Course Requirements

 You must register with your national association, (BCU, WCA, SCA, CANI), before joining any coaching course. All candidates must obtain a stamped C1 form before booking any BCU coaching course. For this you must be 18 years old, have a 3* Inland Kayak Award Certificate and a Canoe Safety Test Certificate.

BCU Level 2 Inland Kayak Coach Assessment

This course is intended for assessing those who have previously attended a Level 2 Inland Kayak Training Course. Once completed, you will be able to introduce beginners to simple inland or sheltered coastal waters. Please be prepared for an intensive weekend of additional training and assessment. This award is an essential stepping stone for Coaches in outdoor centres, schools and clubs.

Pre Course Requirements

You must have a stamped C1 form indicating your attendance on a level 2 inland Kayak training course and evidence of sufficient coaching hours. In addition, you must be 18 years old, have a 3* Inland Kayak Award Certificate, current approved First Aid certificate and a Canoe Safety Test Certificate.

BCU Level 3 Inland Kayak Coach Training

This course is intended for those who will be in charge of a club, school or Outdoor Centre groups. Training at this level is designed to develop the range of and depth of the coach’s leadership and coaching skills and you should be prepared for an intensive weekend of training and preparation. It is an essential stepping stone for Coaches in outdoor centres, schools and clubs. You will receive excellent training from professional Coaches in relevant locations

Pre Course Requirements

You must have a stamped C1 form indicating your approval to attend a training course. In addition, you must be 18 years old, have a have a Level 2 Coach Certificate, 4* Award Certificate, current approved First Aid certificate and a Canoe Safety Test Certificate.

BCU Level 3 Kayak Coach Assessment

This course is intended for assessing those who have previously attended a Level 3 Training Course. Once completed, you will be able to introduce beginners to simple white water rivers. Please be prepared for an intensive weekend of additional training and assessment. This award is an essential stepping stone for Coaches in outdoor centres, schools and clubs.

You must have a stamped C1 form indicating your attendance on a level 3 inland kayak training course and evidence of sufficient coaching hours. In addition, you must be 18 years old, have a 4* Inland Kayak Award Certificate, current approved First Aid certificate and a Canoe Safety Test Certificate.
