The aim of this course is to deliver a basic understanding of how a boat sails, with some experience of steering and handling the boat. There is no minimum age for this course. You will cover such aspects as launching and recovery, steering, parts of the boat and basic sailing. By the end of this stage you will be able to steer and understand basic principles of sailing.

Sailing – RYA: Start Sailing (Stage 2)

At Stage 2 you will cover a range of sailing skills and knowledge to help in becoming a confident sailor. It is assumed that you have the basic knowledge covered in Stage 1, unless you are doing a combined Stage 1 and 2 course. At Stage 2 you will learn about basic sailing skills, ropework and collision avoidance! After the course you will be able to tack and control boat speed, and understand basic principles.

Sailing – RYA: Start Sailing (Stage 3)

Stage 3 gets more advanced, covering rigging, launching and sailing in any direction. It is equivalent to Level 2 in the National Sailing Scheme. You will cover topics such as rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques, capsize recovery and sailing theory. By the end of the course you will be able to launch and sail a dinghy around a triangular course in moderate conditions.

Stage 3

Sailing – RYA: Start Sailing (Stage 4)

Stage 4 moves you onto areas such as sailing a double handed boat as crew or helm and solving a variety of problems afloat. (optional if Stage 3 was taken in a double handed) The course will look at rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques and manoeuvres in crewed boats and recovering a man overboard. By the end of the course you will be able to launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring, and sail a crewed dinghy around a triangular course in moderate conditions.
