putting skills to the test

An adventure race is an excellent way to put together all the skills learnt throughout the residential visit and, through tackling unforeseen challenges, students grow in confidence and build problem solving skills that will later on translate into helping them deal with unexcepted challenges that may come their way.

Our adventure races are run in the real outdoors of the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors national parks and the level of difficulty of each challenge is adapted to the age and level of experience of students on adventure.

An adventure race can be an excellent way to put map skills and strategic planning into practice.  It also provides the opportunity to draw inspiration from stories of famous adventure racers to understand the psychology behind success under pressurised and challenging conditions.

Key Stage 3

P.E.

Teams in the race will be given time to plan their approach to the race. As part of this planning they will be encouraged to develop strategies that could help give them an advantage.

Geography: Maps

Students will need to use maps to navigate around the course. Grid references can be used to indicate where way point or challenge points are, and these would then need to be plotted on maps and distances/timings given between waypoints.

English: Literacy

Adventure race authors – biographies

There are many biographies from adventure racers which can be used to inspire students. Doing an adventure race may help students want to engage with the biographies further.

Key Stage 4

Geography

Students can learn about issues around conflicts of interest from different land users and how these are managed, such as those for leisure, farming, and conservation.

Psychology

Students can be introduced to the varying social influences faced as part of this race, whether it’s through conformity, obedience, or crowd behaviour. Then, how these can pose a challenge to success.

LOCATIONS: Offered at both Bewerley Park and East Barnby

YEAR GROUPS: Secondary School and post 16 students

DURATION: Available as a full or half day activity

DIFFICULTY: Adapted to the age and level of experience of students on adventure
