Climb into your caving suit, strap on your headlamp, and descend with us into the hidden underground world of the Yorkshire Dales.  Over thousands of years caves have patiently evolved and their fascinating shapes and formations are waiting to be explored – long slender straws and solid stumpy stalagmites arrayed across the rocky floor, are just two types of calcite formations waiting to be discovered.

From simple walking routes to vertical pitches, students will learn to navigate dark passages and support each other in reaching more distant parts of the cave system.  This is a world that very few people get to experience.  For those who do, an amazing experience waits.

The level of difficulty of routes in this underground world is adapted to the age and level of experience of students on adventure.

What’s Included

Students are provided with the following equipment, as and when appropriate.



All specialist equipment

Caving helmet, Petzel LED headlamp and harness or cave belt.



All specialist clothing

Caving suit and wellies. Ideally students should bring their own wellies, but we have plenty on hand to lend.



Transport

Once at the centre, all transport to and from adventure activities is provided.



Experienced, full-time, outdoor teachers and tutors

Each group of 12 students is led by a fully qualified and experienced outdoor tutor.

Getting underground into caves is a fantastic way to get up close and personal with aspects of the curriculum, from seeing the power of nature in forming these natural wonders over thousands of years,  to learning all about how they have been used by humans throughout history.

Key Stage 2

History: Iron Age

Students will learn about how caves have been used during the age of humans – the achievements of the earliest civilizations to the late Neolithic hunter-gatherers.

Geography: Rocks

In this amazing underworld environment, pupils will learn about how these caves were formed, the limestone and its properties, and the process of erosion and its ongoing development.

Key Stage 3

Geography: Geology

In this amazing underworld environment, students will learn about how these caves were formed, limestone and its properties, and the process of erosion and its ongoing development.

History

Students will learn about the history of caves and mankind’s relationship with them – how they have been used over a millennium from mine development, to shelters, and burials.

Key Stage 4

Geography

Natural hazards are part of the GCSE curriculum students will spend time talking about these hazards and exploring how they have shaped our environment whilst caving and exploring underground networks of caves that have been shaped over time.
