Fossiling for primary children

The sandstone, shale and ironstone rocks along the coast near East Barnby are rich in Jurassic marine fossils – famously ammonites but also oysters, scallops and even the occasional dinosaur bone or footprint.

Searching for these ancient animal remains makes for an excellent half-day exploratory learning session, with opportunities to have the science of rock formation and continental drift explained. Children often leave as inspired amateur palaeontologists and always with a souvenir fossil or two.
